3 Decisions Away From Another Good Story

Very few of us have the opportunity (or willingness) to start a road trip without a specific destination we’re traveling to.

I will admit it sounds fun to make our way aimlessly around the country and maybe if we didn’t have young children I would entertain the thought of it. But it seems fairly reckless to buckle up the family and just drive.

However, on more than one occasion, I’ve done this very thing.  Minus the whole driving part.

I’ve been guilty of wandering through seasons of life without a destination. I’ve had times where I let the busyness of the weeks, months or years take over and I just simply… drove.

When you have a destination in mind, you can start to make decisions based on where you’re going.

Think about it.

Do you remember road trips without smartphones? Stopping at a welcome center or rest area where you could look at a map that said “You are here.” You would know exactly how far you were from where you were heading and you know which detours or distractions would cost you precious time.

Some detours are worth it. But we’ll get to that another day.

Our destination informs our decisions.

Consequently, our decisions impact our destination.

Not only do they impact our landing spots but they have all the potential in the world to completely alter where we go. If they don’t alter the “where” they definitely will change the “how.”

As you travel through life, try these three things:

  1. Decide where you’re going.

  2. Decide how you’re getting there.

  3. Decide when to course correct.

For instance, I started writing this and my youngest daughter woke up. After I changed her diaper and sat back down to finish the post, she climbed on the table behind my computer and tried to finish it herself.

It didn’t change the destination but it was an unexpected detour along the way that required some course correcting.

Ask yourself these things today:

  • Do you know where you’re going?

  • Do you know how you’re getting to where you’re going?

  • Do you need to course correct in any area?
