3 Keys To Achieving Your Next Goal

I’m not a very good goalie.

Especially when multiple kids are shooting multiple balls at the same time!

If you ever need to decrease your confidence - may I suggest playing soccer with children.

A few weeks back, we were waiting for one of our girl’s soccer games to start. Two of my kids and I wandered over to a neighboring field and started to play. I offered to play goalie while they took turns taking shots.

And that would have been fine, except they each had a ball, and they each misunderstood the request for “one at a time.”

Ever been scored on by children? The celebrating and taunting can be ruthless.

It was an excellent strategy on their part. No matter how hard I tried to stop both shots, I couldn’t.  The challenge of stopping one kick seems doable but when I focused on two at the same time; I stopped neither.

This brings me to a thought that I believe we all need a little help with: Loss of focus.

Perhaps you know what it’s like to get distracted or bite off more than you can chew.  Or maybe know what it feels like to not meet the demands of the day because of our task lists are so scattered.

When we focus on too many goals - we’re less likely to accomplish any of our goals.

I am not saying you and I are unable to multi-task, but I am saying distractions can harm your personal growth and your productivity.

If our lives are comprised of stories, then this has drastic impact on how our pages read. We’d like to think that all of our daily moments would culminate into one incredible book or chapter but too many of us end our days with stories we wouldn’t let anyone else read.

One of the obstacles that could be in our way are the distractions and task lists we’re allowing to steal our energy.

The questions I’d like to pose are these:

What’s your goal of the week? What’s your goal of the day?  What’s your goal of the hour?

If you’re having trouble determining a goal or clarifying your direction. I wrote about that in a post here. Check it out!

Once you’ve taken a moment to think and answer any of the above questions, I want to encourage you with 3 keys to achieving that goal:

Pick your target

(ie: I’m going to make a play on this shot)

Plan your tactics

(ie: I’m going to position myself between this player and the goal)

Protect your time

(ie: I’m going to push aside all distractions that take me away from this objective)

Goals are good! Too many all at once can be overwhelming.

This strategy can not only make your stories meaningful and memorable - but more enjoyable!

Pick, plan and protect so that at the end of your day, you’re proud of the stories you lived!

*Over the next three blog posts, we’ll explore each of these keys one by one. Stay tuned!
